Exploring Athens

Dimitri and Viviane shared loads of information about Greece and Greek culture with us. It turns out the Dimitri had literally grown up under the shadow of the Acropolis, before it was gated and turned into a park that required fees to enter. He had wonderful stories of playing in the ancient ruins as a child and provided us with much to look for and notice as we headed off to explore Athens on Tuesday morning. Athens is such a fascinating city, where old ancient structures stand in and amidst shops, tavernas, and other businesses. We had heard much about the political goings on in Athens before our arrival and wondered what state we might find the city in. Much to our surprise, the city felt calm, the people were quite quiet and kept to themselves on the mass transit systems. We felt no sense of unrest in the streets. We hiked up the steep hill to the Acropolis, noticing how delightfully quiet it was, very few tourists, and when we got to the gate at 3:00pm, they told us it had closed at 2:30pm (even though the guidebook said it was open until 7pm).
