We had a fun night at the taverna with our host Dimitri and Viviane, talking politics and learning about their families. We tested out the local wines and lots of small plates of yummy Greek foods. Dimitri informed us that the Greek economical situation is discussed all day long on TV, on radio and by men in cafes. He described the situation as a direct consequence of becoming part of the EU (using the Euro). He compared Greece’s crisis with that of America’s, noting that Obama was able to create stimulus plans to keep the economy moving, whereas Greece does not have the independent control for these actions. Instead Greece is forced to rely on borrowing money with incredibly high interest. Because Greece has many strong social systems in place, the average person is not desperate, hungry or homeless. In fact the unemployment rate remains low. That said, the sky is NOT falling within the city limits of Athens…as far as we could see.
