Day 12: The Night Bus from Alesund to Oslo

After a few mishaps trying to meet up with the night bus to Oslo, we finally met the bus as it was departing on the ferry. The bus was extremely crowded and filled with several loud and somewhat wild groups of teens and drunken men (perhaps celebrating the Olympic winners) whatever the reason, this made it very difficult for us to sleep on our ten hour bus ride to Oslo. After a few hours, our drivers changed and the new driver spoke for about 30 minutes (we had no idea what he could possibly be talking about for such an extended time) but finally he wished all a good night, lights went out, seats went back, and this wild busload of people finally went to sleep. Phew….

We arrived in Oslo at the airport the next morning, ate food from the care package our host Kennedy had given us, including bacalou (fish stew) and orange juice- perhaps not the best combination for a Sunday morning meal.

The flight to Stockholm on Norwegian air (which we would recommend highly to anyone flying in this area, they were great) was quick, inexpensive and pleasant. Our friend and relative, Susan Wuest, met us with her mighty mini cooper at the airport and we somehow miraculously managed to fit both us and our travel gear into her car! She was a delight and we had coffee, chatted and laughed then she took us on a little tour of Stockholm. What a beautiful city with inlets, waterways and lakes amidst grand old buildings, cozy cafes, ferries and lovely little neighborhoods tucked here and there. Later in the day we arrived at our 5 W host’s home, Doris, and settled in. She is lovely and lively and has been a member of the 5W group for 15 years, hosting many 5 W travelers during this time. She teaches English, Swedish and loves to tango!
