Day 13: Slushy Stockholm Adventures

We awoke on Monday to a rainy, snowy, slushy mix that continued throughout the day. Jubie set out early in the morning for a run. Without identification, address, phone number, cash or even the host’s last name, she became hopelessly lost in the accumulating snow. Gone for over an hour and a half, she finally returned safely after relying on “gut instinct”. During the panic of being turned around, she joked that plan B would find her the lost American on Swedish News, wondering, “have you seen my mother?”.
The afternoon was spent touring around Old town Stockholm with our new Romanian friend, Oolia. We stopped to fica (Swedish for rest and sip coffee/tea) many times through the day. We became hip to yet another subway system, and spent time gazing and chattering about the sights and people. One of our favorite “rests” was in a five story galleria in the center of Stockholm where we were able to watch the comings and goings of all sorts of Swedes.
We spent the evening with our newly acquainted extended family, Susan and Erik. They invited us to their home (quite near to the royal residence) that is on one of the many beautiful waterways in Stockholm. This was one more time that we wished we had been there in summer as Susan tells us boats glide up and down the waterways behind her home then. We feasted upon homemade spring rolls and Asian noodle soup and learned much about the couples baby buggy business (by the way, we hear the best baby buggies come from New Zealand- who would have thought it?) Yet again we reminded that couples in these northern regions buck tradition and prefer to live happily unmarried ever after! Ah the Swedes….free of mind!
