Bologna Bound

Charlotte and Zach extended great kindness to we weary ones by driving us from Lugano to Bologna. A proper car ride, after the many trains, planes, boats, busses, donkeys and camels seemed almost too easy and sophisticated.
Bologna, oh Bologna! Some fun facts: Our friend Jade tells us that Bologna boasts the oldest university in Italy. She tells us Bologna is the gay capital of Italy. Wouldn’t you know that higher education and liberal lifestyle go hand in hand! Bologna is well known for arcade style of promenade architecture. Once a walled city with canals similar to Venice, Bologna still celebrates these ruins scattered throughout the city proper.
Two of the tallest standing structures in Bologna are two towers built by rival families. At the time of their construction, these towers were to represent the power and wealth of the family line. The story goes that the tallest tower toppled over (too much lean). One can see the city and stubby remnants of this tower from the top of the other tower. We spent an hour climbing to the top. This narrow and claustrophobic staircase made it difficult to pass the large groups of boisterous Italian teenagers.
